Police Sergeant Howie (Woodward) is asked investigate the disappearance of a young girl on the Scottish island of Summerisle. In the remote and tightly knit isle he discovers a secret pagan society which practices bizarre sexual rituals. Howie comes to suspect that the girl was in fact a human sacrifice to the "wicker man."

Ingrid Pitt, in one of her rare "normal" roles, plays the librarian who befriends Sargent Howie.
