Adventure (MGM, 1945) Not Rated
Director:
Victor Fleming.
Screenplay: Frederick Hazlitt Brennan, Vincent
Lawrence.
Cast: Clark Gable, Greer Garson, Joan Blondell,
Thomas Mitchell, Tom Tully, John Qualen.
Storyline:
After the Japanese torpedo their merchant marine ship, Mudgin (Mitchell)
promises to give up his evil ways if he and first mate Harry Patterson
(Gable) are rescued. Back on dry land, Mudgin breaks his promise
to reform and is in mortal fear for his soul. This was Gable's first
film after his return from WWII.
Library
focus: Mudgin begs Harry to accompany him to the library
where they can ask for help. Harry meets and ultimately marries
the librarian, Emily Sears (Garson). Sears is presented as a strong,
independent woman and the library scenes offer a fairly realistic
depiction of the profession.
